Youth Triathlon Program

(Coming Spring 2010)

Boise Youth Triathlon

Mission: To promote a lifelong passion for activity while focusing on swimming, biking, and running. We look to enhance fitness skills with the larger goal of developing self-esteem, teamwork, goal setting, self-discipline and friendly competition. This Youth Program will be both an introduction to sport for beginners and a challenge for the serious competitor. Experienced coaching with a flair for kids will guide the program. The Youth TriathlonProgram will strive to create a healthy and safe environment for kids to learn, laugh, and grow.

The YMCA is a non-profit organization.

*Financial assistance is available*

About the Club
The Boise YMCA Youth Triathlon Program is a USAT sanctioned, non-profit group focused on healthy lifestyles for kids. The age range is 11 – 18 (this is not set in stone but mostly an attempt to keep abilities similiar) years old. This yearly program will offer swim, bike, and run training with safety, sound mechanics and fun being a major theme. We welcome all abilities. There will be several informal and formal kids’ triathlons throughout the year to race in at the local, regional, and national level.

Club Benefits
· Weekly structured group workouts for all abilities
· Beginner/Intermediate & Advanced
· Training groups
· Variety of triathlon clinics free of charge or discounted
· Social events
· Professional Coaching
· Free T-shirt
· Discount on Triathlon Camps

About the Work Outs
Each session will consist of a swim, bike, and run within a 2 hour time slot. The majority of work outs will begin in the pool. After the swim session the kids will get dressed and meet at the bikes to ride on predetermined safe routes under supervision at all times, followed by some running activities. Then, we’ll bike back to the YMCA for the kids to be picked up. Overall workout focus:

· Learning correct swim, bike, and run biomechanics
· Doing drills will be a large part of swim & run training
· Safety will be the most important aspect to biking
· Relays and games will challenge the kids while having fun
· Aerobic fitness will be improved
· Lifelong active lifestyles will be instilled
· Monthly, if not weekly informal races (practice triathlons) will keep the kids engaged

Meeting location:

Most of the year we will swim first, so we'll lock the bikes near the Y entrance and then try to be on the pool deck by the start time. We will have a 30 foot cable to lock bikes.

After the Time Change October 25th, we will bike and run first while there is still daylight. Then, we will swim.

For many of the winter months we will not bike, however, under most conditions we can still run. We may have to walk/hike but we would still like to get outside when possible.

If the weather is questionable; check the forum, here, for the thumbs up or down on bikes.

We had our first kids yesterday! So much fun.

This is a new program at the YMCA, and also for our front desk. Some tips to help you:

**The Youth Tri is a membership Add-On, just like adding/removing towels.

**You must do it in person becasue you'll have to sign a change form

**The change form allows us to make changes to your membership bill

**You can start or cancel at any time (we expect some of this, as kids get involved with other sports through out the year)

We'll start up the Youth Tri program again in the spring when the weather is more 'fun' for being outside...

Hi Kevin,

For our planning purposes, do you have an approximate date or month the youth program will restart in Spring 2010? Our son is interested in joining -- age 11.

We'd like to have a build up to the 2010 YMCA Spring Sprint Triathlon the 1st or second weekend of April. So, starting in early March will give the kids 3 to 4 weeks to prepare with help from our coaches. Then, we'll keep the Tri program going the rest of the spring and summer.

OK...the weather is changing and it's about time to get our youth involved with this oustanding lifestyle choice that is...triathlons!
Thursday April 1st will be our first pracitce at the Downtown YMCA from 4 to 6pm.
For now we will stick with the Yellow program above and work with kids 11 & up. As we grow the program we'll add more practices and more age groups.
