It was a very cold morning for the turkey trot relay this November 22nd. The new Boise Y Tri Club had a great showing with three teams entering, and all wearing their tri club t-shirts (except James, who apparently is under contract with the color yellow).
After huddling around the heaters for a while, it finally came time to line up. Of course, James, Jeremy and Brian did a few minutes of warming up before-hand.....well, I call it sprints, but for them it was just a warm-up.
Team 1 (Jeremy, Eric, Joe, James) started out with big Jeremy up front. With such a crowd of people, we figured Jeremy could take a few people out on his way to the front. As Jeremy stated: "Rubbing is racing". Team 2's (Harold 2x, Rob, Brian) first runner was Harold, and taking the NASCAR strategy he tucked in behind Jeremy. Team Lady Bytri (Colby, Erin, Hortie, Julie) started out with Erin (I didn't see as I was waiting in line at the porta-potty....of which there were only two....really? 150 teams of four and there are only two porta-pottys? I mean, you're serving coffee at the start line!).
Jeremy had a couple cross-country teams ahead of him, so he kept pace with them, being the third guy in at the end of the first leg. Not but 25 yards behind him was Harold. Next up was Eric and Doc Rob running within a few yards of each other...and Colby for the ladies. The two guys ran around the same pace the whole time (I believe somewhere around 6:15's or so), again blowing our times out of the water (in a good way - nice run guys).
Next was Brian and myself. We were both listed as running 13 minutes, so we figured we could pace ourselves pretty well. Well.....I started out about 10 seconds ahead of Brian. He caught me right at mile one (there was a 8 foot hill up a bridge that I just couldn't hold.....MAN those hills). I paced with Brian the next half mile or so....thinking it was fast but that 6:30 was supposed to feel fast for me.
Side note here, it was very cool to be passing a whole bunch of people (most on their second leg, us on our third) wearing our tri club shirts. I'm hoping between the 11 of us running, there was some notice taken by the other folks at the race.
With about 400 yards to go, Brian took off, and he finished about 25 yards ahead of me. Come to find out later he ran a 12:12 or so, and I guess I was around 12:25...which would put me at 6:13's.....little faster than I'd planned but it's fun to beat your proposed time. Was great to have Brian there to push me. Running the third leg for the ladies was Hortie, who seemed to run a pretty strong leg and was running well when she came in.
The last leg was to Harold (again) and James for the guys, and Julie for the ladies. Harold had a few yards on James from Brian's strong run, but James came up on him pretty quick. The two then ran together the whole way, pacing at around 5:30 min/miles, except for the last 1/4 mile, where James turned the juice on (I think it was my cheerleading that motivated him....he was very.....ummm....excited).
Julie finished it up for Boise Tri Club with a very enthusiastic and strong run....and plenty of loud cheers from her fellow club members.
Afterward the teams went to breakfast and Kelly, who thankfully organized us, joined in. Was a good meal at Chef Lou's. This crew loves their breakfast.
A great run and great amount of fun for everyone. To those who I didn't get a better story from, please post on how your legs went!
