"I'm here a week now... waiting for a mission... getting softer. Every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker, and every minute Charlie squats in the bush, he gets stronger. Each time I looked around the walls moved in a little tighter."

The only difference is I can't practice my crazy karate moves because of my foot.

I'm very excited about the new club getting off the ground. There are so many great things to expanding the core group. It means more camaraderie among the group, it means a broader spectrum of abilities, allowing people at all levels to have others to train and push with.

A big turnout would be a great sign that there is still an active community of people interested in fitness - great given the sedentary lifestyles of this day and age.

I must admit, I really was excited when I put on the new club t-shirt (and will be wearing it tonight at the lifting session). I'm even more excited to see what the uniforms are going to look like. Imagine showing up at triathlons as a team.....awesome.

Here's hoping we pick up some great new people in the next week!

Last Wednesday Workout

Image: http://lh3.ggpht.com/__dQ6HM5qneY/SQkrEA_9Q-I/AAAAAAAABW0/SJnyTw6QgUQ/s640/100_0281.JPG Last night was a bittersweet night for me when it...

Last night was a bittersweet night for me when it comes to triathlon training. When I first joined Harold's group of athletes in July (I still have a hard time referring to myself as an "athlete"), the Wednesday workout was my introduction to the group and to the training methods employed by Harold. More than any other area of training, my progression was most obvious here.

These workouts are held at a local high school track in downtown Boise. The group sets up their road bikes onto trainers on the outside corner of the track (under some trees to escape the heat). The workout starts with everyone spinning for ten minutes on their bikes. Once that ten minutes is up, you jump out of your shoes and off the bike, throw on your running shoes, and run a mile around the track at a hard pace. That is one interval. You do this a number of times, ranging from two (if you are tapering for a race) to six.

When I first started out, I was a pretty slow runner, was using a trainer I borrowed from Antonio, and had no idea what I was doing. I think I was told by Harold to do three intervals that day on a 7:30 pace. I quickly learned, though, how running these intervals with the group has a profound effect on your ability to run hard. I was in the low 7:00's the first time, and very proud of myself. I was amazed at all the guys running in the 5 - 6 minute mile range...but I never thought of that for myself as I had never been a fast runner.

Fast forward to last night (three months later). I finished out with three intervals, and my mile times were 5:53, 6:02 and 5:48. I can't even begin to explain how impossible those times seemed to me when I began. It's such a great feeling to actually be able to know I can get off the bike and run a sub-6 mile.

Another great example of how much I have improved was during one of my taper weeks. I was running just three at 6:40 min/miles. I ran them with Harold and we were chatting while running. I told him that if you had asked me to run a 6:40 when I first started, I would have not been able to think about talking while running it. Now a 6:40 feels fairly comfortable!

The reason this is bittersweet, though, is because I feel like I am still progressing, and now we're done. I know it's for the best to start winter training, but it's definitely difficult to stop doing something when you know you are in the midst of making gains. The positive part is, though, knowing we'll pick it back up at some point next year, and I know I'll start at a much better spot than I did this year. I have plenty of time to get faster! :)
